Why this cluster
Three dedicated controllers, 12 compute nodes, 4 accelerated nodes and 6 Ceph OSD nodes. Dedicated controllers mean the control plane survives losing one, the accelerated nodes sit in their own host aggregate, and the OSD nodes hold 600TB behind erasure coding. Tenant and storage traffic run on separate VLANs over bonded 100GbE.

What it is for
A private cloud gives you cloud computing on hardware you own and run. MAAS manages the physical machines (PXE discovery, IPMI power control and automated operating system deployment), and OpenStack adds virtual machines, software-defined networking and storage on top. Performance depends as much on the control plane staying available, and on data moving efficiently between components, as on processor speed. That is why the controllers are specified separately from the compute. Choose it for data residency, security or regulatory needs, and for workloads where owning the hardware costs less than renting it.
