Why this cluster
Still 3 controllers, because two cannot form a quorum and the control plane is the reason to own this instead of renting. Ceph runs hyperconverged on the compute nodes with three-way replication, which is what makes 9 nodes enough.

What it is for
A private cloud gives you cloud computing on hardware you own and run. MAAS manages the physical machines (PXE discovery, IPMI power control and automated operating system deployment), and OpenStack adds virtual machines, software-defined networking and storage on top. Performance depends as much on the control plane staying available, and on data moving efficiently between components, as on processor speed. That is why the controllers are specified separately from the compute. Choose it for data residency, security or regulatory needs, and for workloads where owning the hardware costs less than renting it.
