Workstations for SOLIDWORKS

Part and assembly design bound by one core's clock, with simulation that wants every core and rendering that wants the graphics card.

What SOLIDWORKS actually needs

1

Design and modelling

Needs: One fast core

Rebuilds, mates and most of the interface run on a single thread, so SOLIDWORKS is a frequency-bound application.

2

Simulation and Flow Simulation

Needs: Many cores and memory

Simulation studies use all available cores, and large meshes need memory to stay out of the disk.

3

Rendering with Visualize

Needs: The graphics card

Visualize renders on NVIDIA cards, and scene size is limited by video memory.

The same advice applies to SOLIDWORKS Simulation, SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation and SOLIDWORKS Visualize.

Hardware at a glance

What to buy for SOLIDWORKS

ProcessorHigh clock for design. 24 or more cores only if you run Simulation regularly.
Memory32GB minimum, 64GB for large assemblies, 128GB for heavy Simulation.
GraphicsA professional RTX card, the class Dassault's certified list is drawn from, for full support.
StorageNVMe for the working folder and the PDM cache.

Questions

SOLIDWORKS hardware questions

What kind of computer do I need for SOLIDWORKS?

A high-clock processor for modelling, 32GB or more of memory, NVMe storage and a professional graphics card. Add cores only if you run Simulation often.

Do I need a certified graphics card for SOLIDWORKS?

For full support, yes. Dassault certifies professional RTX cards, and features such as RealView are only guaranteed on certified hardware. GeForce cards run SOLIDWORKS but are not supported by Dassault.

Are more cores better for SOLIDWORKS?

Not for design. Modelling uses one core, so a 16-core processor at a high clock feels faster than a 32-core one at a lower clock. Cores pay off in Simulation and Flow Simulation.

How much RAM do I need for SOLIDWORKS?

32GB for parts and modest assemblies, 64GB for large assemblies, and 128GB or more for large Simulation studies.
