Workstations for Ansys Fluent and Mechanical

Simulation sized by the licence you hold and the size of your mesh, where memory bandwidth per core matters as much as the core count.

Task by task

What Ansys actually needs

1

Fluent CFD

Needs: Memory bandwidth and licensed cores

Fluent scales with cores until memory bandwidth runs out, so all memory channels should be filled.

2

Fluent GPU solver

Needs: Video memory

When the mesh fits in the card's memory, the GPU solver runs a whole case far faster.

3

Mechanical FEA

Needs: Memory, then a fast drive

The direct solver is fastest when the whole problem fits in memory.

The same advice applies to Ansys CFX, Ansys Rocky and Ansys LS-DYNA.

Hardware at a glance

What to buy for Ansys

ProcessorMatch the core count to your HPC licence. Eight memory channels matter more than extra cores.
MemoryPlan on roughly 1 to 2GB per million cells for CFD. 128GB is the practical starting point.
GraphicsA professional card with 32 to 48GB if you use the Fluent GPU solver. Otherwise modest.
StorageFast NVMe for scratch, results and Mechanical's out-of-core files.

Questions

Ansys hardware questions

How many cores do I need for Ansys Fluent?

As many as your licence covers, and no more. Ansys licenses solver cores in steps, so buying 64 cores against a licence that covers 36 leaves the rest idle.

How much RAM for Fluent?

A rough planning figure is 1 to 2GB per million cells, more for double precision and complex physics. A 50 million cell case therefore wants 64 to 128GB.

Should I use the Fluent GPU solver?

For cases it supports, it can be many times faster than the CPU solver, as long as the mesh fits in the card's memory. That is why our CFD machines carry 32 to 48GB professional cards.

Workstation or server for simulation?

A workstation suits one engineer. A rack server suits a team sharing a licence, running long jobs overnight without tying up anyone's desk.
